Bar/Bat Mitzvah
Bar Mitzvah/Bat Mitzvah Celebrations
American culture is a wonderful mix of religious and secular, spiritual and cultural tradition. Jewish tradition is no less so!
Journeys of the Heart provides a place where unaffiliated Jewish young people, with their families, can experience the richness of the tradition within the context of their own spiritual or cultural beliefs.
The goal of our Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah celebrations is to permit the young person to experience the joy and richness of the tradition without the years of traditional schooling.
Our hope is for this to be a wonderful, joyous embracing of the tradition which will remain a constant source of hope and inspiration along life’s path. If and when the young person wishes to explore the tradition more fully, they will have had the experience of this coming of age ritual so dear to the hearts of Jewish people.
Our Jewish officiant will happily preside at the ceremony at a place of your choosing. The Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah will take place after a sufficient course of instruction (usually 5 to 7 meetings) and preparation in Torah and its teachings. Your young person will be fully prepared to celebrate this wonderful tradition on his or her own terms while honoring the tradition as it has been passed on through so many generations.
According to Jewish law, when Jewish children reach the 13 years for boys and 12 for girls they become responsible for their actions, and "become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah." In many Conservative and Reform synagogues, girls celebrate their Bat Mitzvahs at age 13 along with boys. This also coincides with physical puberty. Prior to this, the child's parents hold the responsibility for the child's adherence to Jewish law and tradition. After this age, children bear their own responsibility for Jewish ritual law, tradition and ethics and are privileged to participate in all areas of Jewish community life.
In modern Jewish observance, the occasion of becoming a Bar Mitzvah a Bat Mitzvah generally involves the young man or woman giving a discussion on the Torah portion. Journeys of the Heart will help create a unique and personal service which incorporates the beauty of the tradition as well as secular humanist Jewish practices, if desired, all at the skill set level of each individual child.
Never Had Bat Mitzvah/Bar Mitzvah?
Many people do not realize that Bar Mitzvah/Bat Mitzvah need not be something that is only available to young people. Anyone who is Jewish who has not experienced a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah and wishes to do so, is eligible to embrace their tradition in this way. Journeys of the Heart officiants can create a wonderful way for a person of any age to enter into their tradition in this wonderful, life-affirming celebration of Jewish tradition.
